2016 CHOT Industry Advisory Board Fall Meeting Recap
The Center for Health Organization Transformation (CHOT) held its Fall 2016 Industry Advisory Board (IAB) meeting October 25-26. This year’s meeting was co-hosted by CHOT at Penn State CHOT and Penn State Health and was held at the Hershey Lodge in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
The event was attended by over 90 IAB members, NSF representatives, faculty, and graduate/undergraduate students. The attendees included more than 20 Penn State CHOT students, faculty, and partners, including PSU CHOT Site Director Conrad Tucker, Assistant Professor, Engineering Design Technology And Professional Programs. CHOT Scholars Eric Swenson (graduate student, industrial engineering); Yifeng Yu (graduate student, industrial engineering); Linlin Ma (graduate student, industrial engineering); and Sunghoon Lim (graduate student, industrial engineering) were also in attendance and presented research at the conference.
The agenda for the meeting included a keynote address from Dr. Lauren Hughes, Deputy Secretary for Health Innovation with the Pennsylvania Department of Health, CHOT Research Impact and Insight Presentations, and thematic breakout sessions where participants worked to develop themes for the upcoming research year. These research themes included Care Coordination, Access to Care, Future Models of Primary Care, System Optimization, Machine Learning, Marketing in the healthcare sector, Population Health Strategies, and Healthcare Workforce.
In addition to these agenda items, PSU CHOT scholars presented their current research in a poster presentation competition with students from 5 other universities. PSU CHOT scholar Linlin Ma won third place in the competition for her research project, “Constructing a risk factor visualization and area-based risk index for heart failure.”
The IAB meets twice a year to contribute to the Center’s strategic direction, advise on projects, new university partners, and industry members, and select new projects. The meeting featured working sessions, research panels, poster sessions and collaborative roundtable discussions for CHOT directors and graduate students who participate in their university’s CHOT-related research center.
Register Now for the Fall 2016 CHOT Symposium!
Exciting changes are happening at the Penn State National Science Foundation Center for Health Organization Transformation (NSF CHOT). The CHOT mission is to advance transformation in health systems through applied transdisciplinary research. At CHOT we are focused on creating healthcare solutions through collaborative research, education, and outreach.
At CHOT we are busy working on the next phase of this vibrant organization and as a result, we are looking forward to the Fall 2016 CHOT Symposium. This collaborative event will be held September 7, 2016 at the Nittany Lion Inn Alumni Lounge from 8:30-4:30 (breakfast and lunch will be served).
This symposium will educate attendees on how to get involved with CHOT through faculty presentations as well as presentations from students working on current CHOT projects. In addition, we are excited to announce that CHOT has funding available for a collaborative research project resulting in an opportunity to fully support up to 3 graduate students for an academic year.
We are energized by the possibilities that this year holds at CHOT. Please register to reserve your spot today by filling out this registration form. If you have further questions, please contact Liz Welker at mew30@psu.edu.

CHOT Student Spotlight: Eric Swenson
Eric Swenson is a leader, researcher, and educator. Prior to returning to Penn State, he served in various leadership roles in the US Army. He is currently a PhD candidate in the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University where his research efforts focus on the improvement of operational processes, performance, value improvement, and management in healthcare delivery systems. He is studying to earn a dual title degree in operations research and industrial engineering under the guidance of Dr. Harriet Nembhard and Dr. Conrad Tucker. He is scheduled to defend his dissertation in the Spring of 2017 and graduate in May 2017.
Eric holds a Bachelor of Science in Systems Engineering from the United States Military Academy, a Master of Science in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research from the Pennsylvania State University, and a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College. Eric is an active member of two healthcare focused research centers: the National Science Foundation Center for Health Organization Transformation (NSF-CHOT) and the Center for Integrated Healthcare Delivery Systems (CIHDS). He also serves as the Vice President of the Penn State student chapter of INFORMS and is a student leader in IEGA, the department’s industrial engineering graduate association.
Eric returned to Penn State in 2014 to begin his PhD studies after a six year hiatus from graduate school. During his break, he taught calculus and probability and statistics at the United States Military Academy for two years and spent three years serving in a US Army combat engineer battalion in Bamberg, Germany. Although his healthcare research was put on hold after graduating in 2008, it was CIHDS and its mission to advance transformation in health systems through applied research with a focus on creating healthcare solutions through collaborative research, education and outreach that drew him back to Penn State for his PhD.
As part of the CIHDS team, Eric has worked on three research projects sponsored by the NSF I/UCRC Center for Health Organization Transformation (NSF-CHOT). The first project involves the use of smart interventions and technology to improve health outcomes in total joint arthroplasty. The second project leverages statistical learning and electronic medical records for healthcare market segmentation to improve health promotion. His third project deals with the evolution and implementation of value based purchasing models in healthcare.
